On saying "later"
2026-06-28
DraftI say "later" more than I'd like to admit. Later I'll answer that message, later I'll fix that bug, later I'll go for the walk. It sounds harmless, and most of the time it is. But I've noticed that "later" is where small things go to quietly pile up.
I don't think the answer is to do everything the moment it appears — that's just a different kind of stress. What's helped me a little is being honest about the difference between "I'll do this later" and "I'm not going to do this." When I can admit it's the second one, I feel lighter. And when it really is the first, I try to give it an actual time instead of a vague someday.
Most of my "laters" were never really plans. They were just polite ways of saying no to myself.
I'm still figuring this out, honestly. Some days I do the thing; some days "later" wins. But naming it has made it easier to choose, and that feels like enough for now.
